Moss Neck Manor
Bartzen + Ball was commissioned to design a 20,000 square foot Retreat Center and Lodge for the Silver Companies on a seventy-five acre parcel of land in Caroline County, Virginia, near Fredericksburg.
The program includes a “Great Hall” which opens onto the Dining Room and Living Room. A large kitchen allows for banquet service, and large and small conference rooms are provided on the ground floor. The twelve guest rooms vary in size with four on each floor.
The lodge is sited carefully on a bluff overlooking the larger property. All of the wood interior paneling and flooring has been provided by trees harvested from the project site. Construction is primarily timber fame, with rough hewn timber columns, and some standard framing. The exterior consists of bark shingles, square log wood siding, vertical board and batten, metal roofing and stone to evoke the aesthetic of Adirondack camp architecture.
