Bartzen & Ball, PLLC is a Virginia based architectural practice specializing in planning and design of a variety of project types including office buildings, institutional, academic and athletic facilities, cultural and visitor's centers, historic preservation and adaptive reuse, and interior design.  Bartzen + Ball, PLLC was established in 2001 by Maynard Ball and Bernard 'Tut' Bartzen, both of whom were partners in larger architectural firms; SmithGroup of Washington, DC and Marcellus Wright Cox and Smith of Richmond, Virginia. 

Our firm is comprised of a group of architects who have years of experience in working together on higher education, cultural, visitor centers and historic properties.  Our design expertise is extensive and focused on both the design and the technical issues related to these facilities.  It encompasses programming and planning, conceptual and technical design as well as management and implementation of projects ranging from small, state of the art facilities for higher educational clients and cultural institutions.

Bartzen + Ball, PLLC was founded in June, 2001 by Tut Bartzen & Maynard Ball.  1229 King Street in Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia - our first project, a new speculative office building is completed.

2002

Shawn Van Tiem joined the firm.

Design work begins on Woodberry Forest School’s Terry House Dormitory project.

2003

Woodberry Forest School Reading Room Renovation construction completed.

Platt Residence, Aledo, Texas completed.

2004

Terry House Dormitory at Woodberry Forest School construction completed.

Design work begins on the Montpelier Visitor’s Center.

2005

Terry House Dormitory at Woodberry Forest School construction completed.

 Design work begins on the Montpelier Visitor’s Center.

2006

Brian Pritham joined the firm. 

Visitor’s Center and duPont Gallery at James Madison’s Montpelier construction completed.

Design work begins on Roslyn Chapel site selection and concept design.

The Headmaster’s Residence at Woodberry Forest School, a renovation and addition to the historic structure, construction completed.

 Shenandoah University History & Tourism Center construction completed.

2008

Woodberry Forest School Dowd-Finch Dormitory Renovation / Addition construction completed.

Johnson Stadium and Squash Facility at Woodberry Forest School construction completed .

Design work begins on Woodberry Forest School’s New Science Building.

2009

Design work begins on Woodberry Forest School’s New Science Building.

2010

Bishop’s Chapel at Episcopal Diocese of Virginia’s Roslyn Retreat Center construction completed.

2011

Design work begins on UVA MacArthur Squash Center and the new UVA Varsity Tennis Facility at The Boar’s Head Sports Club.

2012

Firm moved studio to 414 W. Franklin Street, Richmond, Virginia.

Terry McCormick joined the firm.

Woodberry Forest School New Science Building construction completed.

Bishop’s Chapel at Roslyn wins Woodworks Design Award, Institutional Category.

Design work begins on Woodberry Forest School’s New Dining Hall / Computer Science Facility.

2013

UVA MacArthur Squash Center at The Boar’s Head Sports Club construction completed.

WFS Dining Hall + Computer Science Classroom Building starts construction.

Veritas Lingle Hall completes construction. 

Country Club of Virginia Tennis courts open.

2015

WFS Dining Hall + Computer Science Classroom Building (Terry Dining Hall + Kenan Building)  opens.

St. Catherine's School Junior Kindergarten building opens.
